Carbon Footprint

Reducing our carbon footprint

Tate & Lyle’s purpose is Transforming Lives Through the Science of Food. Our people believe passionately that, through our purpose, we can successfully grow our business and have a positive impact on society.

As part of our pillar on caring for the planet we live on and helping protect its natural resources for the benefit of future generations, we have established ambitious carbon reduction targets including a commitment that by 2050, we'll be carbon net-zero.1

This build on the science-based targets for reducing all our greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1, 2 and 3) that we set in 2020. They are:

  • By 2030, we’ll have delivered a 30% absolute reduction in our Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions.2

  • By 2030, we’ll have delivered a 15% absolute reduction in our Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions.

  • By 2025, we’ll have eliminated coal from all our operations.

To make our carbon footprint targets more meaningful, they are based on absolute rather than intensity reduction. Our commitments were validated by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) and approved as science-based targets in August 2020.

This means that, by meeting our greenhouse gas reduction targets by 2030, we will play our part in helping limit global warming, in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

In addition to our existing targets, we are setting a new target that, by 2030, 100% of the electricity we purchase for our facilities will come from renewable sources, eliminating our Scope 2 GHG emissions.

1 - The baseline for our ‘caring for our planet’ targets is the year ended 31 December 2019.

Given the separation in April 2022 of the Tate & Lyle group into two standalone businesses – Tate & Lyle and Primient – we carried out an exercise to recalculate the 2019 baseline for the carbon footprint of both businesses. Further details can be found on page 55 of the Annual Report 2022.

2 - We withdrew an interim ambition to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2025.

How we’re tracking against our targets

✓ 4% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions (30% absolute reduction by 2030)

✓ 5% absolute reduction in Scope 3 GHG emissions (15% absolute reduction by 2030)

✓ Eliminated coal from our operations in 2021, four years early.
