Tate & Lyle unveils progress against purpose targets in Purpose Report 2021

| Filed in:

01 December 2021 – Tate & Lyle PLC (Tate & Lyle), a leading global provider of food and beverage solutions and ingredients, is pleased to announce the publication today of its Purpose Report 2021.

Purpose 21

This interactive report, available in electronic format on Tate & Lyle’s website and via a link below, describes how Tate & Lyle’s purpose of Improving Lives for Generations is being lived across the organisation, and outlines the first year of progress against the ambitious long-term purpose targets and commitments set out in 2020.

Nick Hampton, Chief Executive, Tate & Lyle said: “Our purpose is at the heart of our business, helping us to navigate an uncertain and constantly changing world. The ongoing challenges of the global pandemic, the heightened dialogue about inclusion and the climate emergency have showed us the value of healthy living, the importance of connecting with and supporting each other as colleagues and neighbours, and the fragility of the natural world. That’s why we are more determined than ever to keep pursuing our purpose targets and commitments, and I am delighted with the progress we are making.”

Tate & Lyle’s purpose of Improving Lives for Generations is lived through three pillars – Supporting Healthy Living, Building Thriving Communities and Caring for our Planet.  Under each pillar, Tate & Lyle has set targets for the next 5 or 10 years from 2020, for example: to remove 9 million tonnes of sugar from people’s diets through our low- and no-calorie sweeteners and fibres by 2025; to provide over 3 million nutritious meals for people in need by 2025; and to deliver a 30% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. As part of our Building Thriving Communities pillar, the Purpose Report 2021 also includes new targets to significantly progress equity, diversity & inclusion within the organisation.

Tate & Lyle will report on the second year of progress against its purpose targets and commitments in 2022.

Note to Editors:

A snapshot of Tate & Lyle’s progress on its targets and commitments is detailed below:

Supporting Healthy Living

  • Through Tate & Lyle’s low-and no-calorie sweeteners and fibres, we tool 1.8 million tonnes of sugar out of people’s diets over the last year, against our 2025 target of 9 million tonnes.
  • Tate & Lyle is supporting health education and physical activity programmes around the world and in the last year we helped 40,000 people contributing towards our 2025 target of 250,000.
  • By 2025, Tate & Lyle aims for at least 90% of its employees to feel that their health and wellbeing is being actively supported by the company. In the last year, 75% of employees agreed, up from 70% in 2020.

Building Thriving Communities

  • Tate & Lyle supports 25 food banks across the world to provide nutritious meals to those in need. During Covid-19, demand for food banks rose significantly, so we donated an extra 1 million meals beyond our annual programme of 700,000 meals. Our 2025 target is to provide 3 million meals.
  • By 2025, Tate & Lyle aims to have supported the education of over 100,000 children and students through learning programmes and grants, helping them attain skills for life. In the last year, we supported 14,000 children.
  • Tate & Lyle is committed to reaching gender parity in leadership roles by 2025. We have reached 32%, up from 27% in 2020.

Caring for our Planet

  • By 2030, the Tate & Lyle aims to deliver a 30% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions. In the year ended 31 December 2020 (‘CY20’), we delivered a 7% reduction. We also have a target of a 15% absolute reduction in Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. In CY20, we delivered a 0.5% reduction.
  • Tate & Lyle’s goal is to use 15% less water by 2030. In CY20, we delivered a 1% reduction.
  • By 2030, our target is to beneficially use 100% of the waste we generate and in CY20 we delivered 69%.
  • Tate & Lyle committed to eliminate the use of coal in all its operations by 2025. We delivered on that commitment in October 2021, four years ahead of target.
  • In CY20, Tate & Lyle achieved its target of maintaining sustainable acreage equivalent to the volume of corn it buys globally each year.
