Tate & Lyle Fiber Portfolio Confirmed as a Source of Fiber under FDA’s New Definition

PROMITOR® Soluble Fiber and STA-LITE® Polydextrose join PromOat® Beta Glucan
as fibers under new definition.

(CHICAGO, USA), 14 June 2018 – Tate & Lyle PLC (Tate & Lyle), a leading global provider of food ingredients and solutions, is pleased to announce that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed that Tate & Lyle’s PROMITOR® Soluble Fiber (a resistant maltodextrin), and STA-LITE® Polydextrose have been included under its new definition of dietary fiber.

In May 2016, the FDA announced a new regulatory definition for dietary fiber, and stated that to be considered a source of fiber, isolated or synthetic non-digestible carbohydrates must have a demonstrated physiological health benefit.  Tate & Lyle’s PromOat® Beta Glucan immediately qualified under this new definition because of a pre-existing FDA authorized health claim for oat beta glucan. With the additional approvals of PROMITOR® Soluble Fiber and STA-LITE® Polydextrose on June 13th, Tate & Lyle’s full fiber portfolio is accepted under the FDA’s new fiber definition and is further proof that Tate & Lyle’s soluble fibers provide a number of different health benefits to consumers alongside functional benefits to manufacturers.

“Tate & Lyle continues to make significant investments in innovation and research to develop healthier and tastier solutions for food and beverage manufacturers and their consumers,” said Andrew Taylor, President ICD, Tate & Lyle. “Due to extensive clinical research on our fibers of their proven physiological benefits, we were confident that our fibers would meet the new requirements, and are delighted that this has now been confirmed by the FDA.”

PromOat® Beta Glucan

PromOat® Beta Glucan helps maintain blood cholesterol levels that are in the healthy range, and promotes healthy glycemic response.  Its superior solubility makes it easy to incorporate into specific beverage applications without grittiness. PromOat® Beta Glucan imparts a creamy mouthfeel and smooth texture, making it ideal for use in reduced-fat foods and beverages.

PROMITOR® Soluble Fiber

New research from Purdue University found that consumption of soluble corn fiber (PROMITOR® Soluble Fiber) during adolescence increased calcium absorption and in the post-menopause period increased bone calcium retention, both critical periods in a woman’s life for bone health. Additional research has ascertained that PROMITOR® Soluble Fiber has more than two times the digestive tolerance of inulin,  making products formulated with it able to be consumed several times a day comfortably. Its high solubility enables manufacturers to significantly boost fiber without creating a chalky or grainy texture.

Tate & Lyle created soluble corn fiber over a decade ago and has continued to be the science leader behind the fiber. In fact, Tate & Lyle provided major input to FDA by submitting the strong scientific evidence necessary to demonstrate the physiological health benefits of soluble corn fiber.

STA-LITE® Polydextrose

STA-LITE® Polydextrose offers benefits of laxation and satiety, with reductions in appetite.   It can help to reduce calories by rebalancing bulk, viscosity and mouthfeel in reduced-sugar/fat products and is ideal for calorie-reduction applications.
